Ubuntu Hardware Set Up - An Important Step

I installed Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon). The sound card did not work. I followed almost every “how-to” article I found on-line. None of them worked. It was always an installation failed, sometimes a package was missing, sometimes a dependency problem.

I messed around and finally took one step, and many of the failed steps worked. All of a sudden my laptop had sound and worked fine. It was weird all those failed to mention this step:

  1. Click “System->Administration->Software Sources”.
  2. Enter the admin password.
  3. Check everything under tab “Ubuntu Software”.
  4. Choose a sever from “Download from”.
  5. Click Close.

After that, “how to” articles became easier to follow.
